It is truly beautiful when a passion and a career wholeheartedly meld into one, and to be able to share the knowledge, passion, and product really is priceless. There are only a handful of people I have met, where I have not only seen, but felt, such passion. Earlier this week, I was fortunate enough to get to know the wonderful owners of Dunn & Walton Organic Store + Kitchen.
What started as a family market garden has become a beautiful store in Doubleview, recently opening its doors as the new face of Absolutely Organics WA. Dunn & Walton opened just two weeks ago, and is already off to an amazing start. This is a little of their story…
“It all began over 20 years ago from a rusty old tin shed on a market garden in Gwelup where we sold our produce two mornings a week. Several years later in April 2002, the doors opened at Absolutely Organics WA. For 13 years, our unique store provided organic food. Today we continue this service as Dunn & Walton with our same honesty and ethics.”
And every bit of that honestly and ethic can be felt as soon as you enter the front door of D&W. I felt it even more so, when I began speaking with the staff and owners. Original market gardeners and owners of Absolutely Organics WA, Annie and Rick Dunn are where this incredible family story began. Stemming from their passion for healthy and organic produce, they not only sold their own, but also spent a lot of time and energy sourcing other local, interstate, and now international organic produce for their store. Daughter, Arena Walton and her partner Travis Walton, who both have extensive experience in health and nutrition, now heavily focus on the store front of Dunn & Walton as they lead the next generation of the Dunn family business with the incredible knowledge and assistance of both Annie and Rick.
Dunn & Walton is the only certified organics store in Perth. Although there are many stores offering a range of organic products, at D&W all products in store fall under the NASAA (National Association for Sustainable Agriculture, Australia) requirements making it unique. Speaking with Annie, she tells me that since the beginning of their business, the Dunn family have strived for uniqueness in maintaining such a high standard of solely certified organic products. She says its been extremely handwork but entirely worthwhile.
“Lots of stores strive to do what we are doing, but if money is your end aim, you wouldn’t do what we are doing,” Annie said.
At D&W, the team have worked hard to create a community among their 25 staff members and build good relations with both customers and fellow suppliers. And this, it seems, they have certainly done. Family, friends, and customers were all alike. These people were happily shopping, chatting and sharing weekend stories. The place was alive with love and good nature. “People have a need, and if we have the answers, we want to share!” Annie tells me. And this, is most certainly admirable.
On top of the wonderful nature of the place, the store offers a range of fresh produce, dairy products, frozen meat, dry goods, health care and gardening products. On top of things for your shopping, the store is also a cafe with excellent coffee (I can most definitely back this up!), a range of teas, lunch options, and a delicious cabinet filled with all kinds of baked and raw desserts. The food looked absolutely delightful.
In todays fast paced, advertised and convenience driven fast food world, sometimes it’s hard to slow down. Stepping into this store certainly provides an opportunity like none other in Perth to really get to know our food and create a better relation with it. D&W is hoping to soon start Sunday workshops where people have the opportunity to partake in courses to learn about how to lead a more organic lifestyle. Gardening, food specific and general health are just some of the topics and speakers will share their knowledge with you.
D&W is open from 6.30 – 6pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 6.30 – 7pm Thursdays and 8 – 3pm on Saturdays
So there are plenty of chances to take some time out to visit this incredible store and meet the wonderful staff who run it.
The store is located at Shop 8, 257 Scarborough Beach Road, Doubleview.
