The Australian Financial Review recently released a Top 100 Restaurants located in Australia list, with an initial 500 finalists battling to reach the covered number 1 spot. Shockingly WA only managed 5 spots in the top 100 compared to NSW’s 45 and Victoria’s 37. Our best representative was East Perth’s Restaurant Amuse at number 45 with the next placing being the rural Vasse Felix (77) in Cowaramup.
While the top spot was once again taken by Sydney CBD restaurant Sepia, the lack of representation WA restaurants was shocking to say the least.
Perth has always prided itself on its food and wine, with Perth containing more restaurants per capita than any other city in Australia, with many of them having awards for their commitment to food excellence. WA boasts nine wine regions, including the world-renowned Margret River and Swan Valley. Hell, even celebrity chefs love it here.
So how did we only get 5 in the top 100??
Well the votes were taken from the venues that were nominated in the top 500 and with a large proportion of these being located over East, chances are the votes cast stayed in their state.
Even still, how long is it going to take before we get some recognition over here?
Excuse me while I google Sepia’s menu though.
