Review: Nicole Henriksen Is Makin It Rain @ Fringe

Words by: Samantha Chemuduri

Saturday the 23rd of January will forever be known as the day I lost my Fringe World virginity. I had the distinct pleasure of watching comedian, Nicole Henriksen step out of her comfort zone and pull back the curtain on what it means to live the life of a high class tease.

However, the show is about so much more than just a behind the scenes look of the sex work industry. I expected Henriksen to lift the veil on stripping, share a few stories from the vault, to walk out with a different outlook on what it means to be a stripper, and of course a dozen comments on how horny individuals really are. And it delivered all of those, and so much more. What I didn’t expect was an actual strip show, questioning the meaning of self-worth and the true essence of feminism.

The show primarily consists of Henriksen and a single chair. Your eyes are focused on her, staring straight ahead, entranced by the way she carries herself and how exuberant her personality is. You’ll carefully listen to her tale of how she found the perfect name, how she got started in the industry, the backlash, and why even despite the bad times – she still loves what she does. And by the end of it, you will find yourself not knowing when to stop clapping because you know she deserves every second of your hands clacking together.

Henriksen (literally) bares it all for this show. You’ll feel the raw emotion in her words, the sadness slowly seeping into you. You’ll find yourself humored, cackling along to her crude jokes and impressions of customers. You’ll follow her through one hell of a ride, and I promise it’s one that will be well worth it.

You can catch Nicole Henriksen is Makin it Rain this coming weekend, the 29th and the 30th, or her other show Nicole Henriksen – Techno Glitter Penguins from the February 3rd to the 6th.
