Located in the suburbs of Mosman Park, Good Things is a relatively new addition to the Perth café scene. With an abundance of natural lighting, a minimalistic décor with wood and plant accents and open windows, Good Things has to be one of my favourite places to relax and eat. Anyone who visits the café can’t ignore the cute mural created by local Perth artist Jae Criddle that spells out ‘It’s all good’, which pretty much sums up the atmosphere and goals of the café, instilling a sense of ease.
Everything on the menu sounded delicious and the varied choices made it hard to choose a dish. One thing I realised about Good Things was that they offered typical breakfast dishes. They had pancakes, waffles, smashed avocado, muesli, eggs and so on, but, Good Things had put their own unique spin on brunch classics making them complex in technique and flavour. Take for example the dish that I ordered, waffles with saffron poached pears, berry compote, chai mascarpone, chai syrup, choc pop rocks and passionfruit dust ($18). Although I would have preferred a Belgian waffle rather than a Liege waffle, you could tell how much effort and creativity had gone into this dish, it was different and complex in terms of its ingredients and technique. It’s always great to eat something that’s out of the ordinary!
The smashed avocado, or appropriately named ‘The Hulk’ due to the vibrancy and multitude of green shades in the dish was stacked high and impressive. The avocado was tossed with smashed peas, pickled red onion and rested on whipped fetta and toast ($19). ‘The Hulk’ really packed a punch, and is a big contender for Perth’s best smashed avocado in my books. The avocado was creamy and delicious, the peas added freshness, the whipped ricotta was wonderfully salty and smooth and the red onion made it more full-bodied.
Another dish that we tried out was the banana hotcakes with double cream, shaved honeycomb, strawberries, grilled bananas and maple syrup ($17). It was comfort food at its best, the pancakes were delicious albeit quite soft, with lots of bananas, and the maple syrup added the perfect amount of natural sweetness. Like the other dishes, it was beautifully presented.
Good Things is located at 128 Wellington Street, Mosman Park and is open Monday to Saturday from 6:30am to 3:30pm, and on Sunday from 7am to 2pm.
