The street view of Fremantle’s Raw Kitchen varies greatly from what awaits inside. The building is a huge warehouse with high ceilings and large sky lights which make for a very bright and airy space. There is an exposed brick wall that gives the place a bit of an industrial vibe when combined with the metal light fixtures and raw concrete floors. It’s balanced out with pops of bright green dotted about the place: pot plants to cleanse the air and calm the atmosphere. It gives me a good earthy feeling.
“Table for one?” I’m asked by a welcoming smile. (And it’s not the first time!)
I’m shown to a comfortable padded bench along a wall with views either side of the centre hub. The majority of the furniture is wooden, fitting with their eco-friendly ethos, slightly eclectic and mixed up with big luxurious lounges and seats that look like they once had a home on some form of public transport in the ‘50s.
The menu all sounds so wonderful I take my time deciding. There’s raw pastas, raw pizzas, pad thai, raw sandwiches, curries, and that’s only the Mains options! In the end the Pad Thai ($26) wins my vote, because I love it in all its glorious forms and have yet to try a raw version. I also order a glass of their locally made kombucha ($7.50/glass), a fruity floral drop named “Joy Tonic”. (Another first for me). Seeing as the majority of the menu is raw, the wait for food is short and it’s not long before my meal arrives. It’s a generous serving, a rainbow of vegetables twisted up like spaghetti with a bunch of fresh mint and coriander on top. It looks so fresh and so healthy I can’t wait to dig in!
The zoodles (zucchini noodles) are the perfect thickness and the combination of ingredients have a lovely variety of texture and flavour; sweet bursts as corn kernels pop in my mouth and tart bites of fresh peas. The nutty dressing has a hint of chili, but a bit more would have made the dish perfect for me, along with some crunchy chunks of peanut or almond. It’s well seasoned though, and every mouthful is an array of different flavours.
Bells ring delicately and unobtrusively when the chefs and baristas have things to be taken out. The kombucha is light and fruity, tasting of passionfruit, bringing my tastebuds to life between bites of Pad Thai. Raw Kitchen is meat free, dairy free and refined sugar free, so I am feeling absolutely no guilt while enjoying lunch, better yet, my stomach is thanking me! After a short break I order a soy latte ($4.50) and ask the waitress which cake is her favourite.
She points me to their raw Avocado Lime cake ($9) which turns out to be the creamiest cake I’ve ever had. Beautiful texture, zingy lime flavour, sweet and delicate crust. No taste of avocado but all the goodness! The coffee was superb too, using a spoonful of coconut sugar to sweeten the deal. Everything about this place agrees with me. And judging by the clientele there with me, it agrees with people of all ages and backgrounds. We all have something in common though, a love and appreciation for healthy and ethical food.
The Raw Kitchen is located at 181A High St, Fremantle and is open Mon – Thu 11:30am – 3:30pm, Fri – Sun 11:30am – 9pm.
